My mum's present that is. Thank you Jill for your suggestion of checking out Hobbycraft, it was perfect! I did go around every single charity shop in my little town first, and trust me there's quite a few, but I couldn't find anything remotely appropriate. So off we went to Hobbycraft and there I found a chain just the right size and colour, and a lovely little closing device too. See for yourself.
I'm quite pleased actually. And if I'd used half of that ball of yarn instead of just slightly over, I might have made one for myself. Maybe in the new year then.
